Finch Restorations – Old-School Mechanic / Generalist Mechanic (Hindmarsh)

Finch Restorations has been restoring and preserving significant vehicles since 1965. As Australia’s oldest vehicle restoration business, we work on vehicles ranging from early motoring history through to modern classics.

We are expanding at our new Hindmarsh flagship site and are seeking a skilled mechanic who values craftsmanship, variety, and sound mechanical judgement.

Why Join Finch Restorations?

  • Real mechanical work: Work on significant vehicles using proven methods, practical judgement, and genuine mechanical skill.
  • Genuine variety: Classic cars, heritage trucks, motorcycles, and specialist restoration projects. No two jobs are the same.
  • Experienced team: Join a multi-skilled workshop with mechanics, panel beaters, trimmers, fabricators, machinists, and restoration craftspeople.
  • Balanced work patterns: Flexible start times and 9-day fortnight options.
  • Great location: Hindmarsh workshop, minutes from the Adelaide CBD and close to the Adelaide Entertainment Centre and public transport options.

About the Role

This is a hands-on, workshop-based position at Hindmarsh. Typical duties include:

  • Servicing, repairing, and commissioning classic cars, heritage trucks, and motorcycles.

  • Stripping, labelling, and storing assemblies as part of restoration projects.
  • Fabricating, machining, or adapting parts that are no longer available.
  • Working confidently on older mechanical systems, including carburettors, points ignition, mechanical fuel systems, and other pre-computer-age technology.
  • Assisting with vehicle assembly, testing, tuning, road testing, and final commissioning.
  • Documenting work to a professional standard.

About You

  • Trade qualification as a Motor Mechanic, Diesel Mechanic, Motorcycle Mechanic, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with classic, heritage, older, or specialist vehicles will be highly regarded.
  • Strong mechanical fault-finding skills without relying solely on scan tools.
  • Practical problem-solving skills and confidence working through unfamiliar mechanical challenges.
  • Fabrication, machining, truck, motorcycle, auto-electrical, or restoration experience would be highly regarded.
  • Australian work rights, including Australian citizen, permanent resident, New Zealand citizen, or valid visa with permission to work in Australia.

Personal Attributes

  • Takes pride in doing the job properly, not just quickly.
  • Enjoys varied work and unusual mechanical problems.
  • Communicates clearly and works well as part of a team.
  • Has a practical, positive, can-do attitude.
