Sentinel Waggon Works, founded in Shrewsbury in 1906, holds a distinguished place in British industrial history. As one of the most prolific builders of steam-powered road vehicles, Sentinel became renowned for producing efficient and durable steam wagons that served across the UK and the wider Commonwealth. Their vertical boiler steam waggons, introduced in the 1910s, became a hallmark of British engineering reliability.
Designed to meet the demands of industries ranging from freight haulage to municipal services, Sentinel steam wagons featured high-speed geared transmissions, compact chassis designs, and ingenious boiler systems that made them more agile and user-friendly than their competitors. Their Super Sentinel line, introduced in the late 1920s, was the culmination of decades of refinement in steam road vehicle technology.
As steam power began to wane, Sentinel responded with innovation. In the late 1940s, they launched a range of diesel-powered lorries and buses, applying their extensive wartime experience in engine repair and design. These vehicles featured horizontal diesel engines—mounted beneath the chassis—ahead-of-their-time layout that presaged the evolution of modern commercial transport architecture.
Sentinel diesel models were equipped with indirect-injection Ricardo-designed engines, with power outputs ranging from 90 to 135 horsepower depending on configuration. Though praised for their ruggedness and forward-control cab design, they were produced in limited numbers. By the time Sentinel ceased vehicle production in 1956, fewer than 1,500 diesel trucks and buses had been made.
Today, Sentinel vehicles—especially the rare diesel variants—are prized by historians and preservationists for their unique place in the transition from steam to internal combustion. Their surviving examples offer a rare glimpse into an industrial era marked by ingenuity, adaptability, and craftsmanship.
Finch Restorations is privileged to contribute to the ongoing preservation of Sentinel’s engineering legacy. Our work with this historic marque reflects our deep respect for early commercial vehicle design and the distinctive requirements of steam and early diesel restoration.
