1949 KB7 International Truck Project
The International K and KB series were introduced by International Harvester in the mid-1940s. In total, there were 42 models, and they were known for their durability. The KB model was introduced in 1947, featuring a widened lower grille that resembles "wings," giving it a distinctive appearance.
The KB-7 was a medium-duty truck, designed for a gross vehicle weight (GVW) of up to 16,500 pounds (7,484 kg). It was powered by the reliable Blue Diamond BLD-269 engine, producing approximately 100 horsepower. Paired with a 5-speed transmission, the KB-7 was built to handle heavy loads while remaining dependable across various industries, including agriculture, freight transport, and fire services.
Finch Restorations undertook a meticulous restoration of a 1949 KB-7, turning it into an award-winning showpiece. This restoration involved multiple stages:
Restoration Process
- Disassembly and Inspection: The cab was separated from the chassis, and both components were stripped of old paint and fillers. This allowed for a thorough inspection to identify and address issues such as rust, cracks, and structural weaknesses.
- Chassis and Body Restoration: Repairs were made to ensure the chassis was straight and free from defects. The body was repaired, ensuring all panels were restored to their original shape before applying high-quality primers and paint.
- Mechanical Overhaul: All mechanical systems, including the engine, transmission, brakes, and electrical components, were either refurbished or replaced. Upgrades were incorporated to meet contemporary performance and safety standards.
- Interior Refinement: The interior received attention with new upholstery, refurbished instruments, and the installation of modern amenities as per the owner's preferences.
- Final Finishing Touches: Custom pinstriping and signwriting were added to enhance authenticity, making the KB-7 a true standout at events.
Since its restoration, this KB-7 has made numerous appearances at truck shows and historic vehicle events across Australia. Its impeccable craftsmanship and attention to detail make it a celebrated example of classic truck restoration.
