Gas Welding, Metal Finishing & Edge Wiring (Mudguard 3)

Learning Objective:

At the conclusion of this lesson, participants will be able to:

  • Perform gas welds on steel.
  • Identify the differences in gas-welding ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
  • Define the mechanism of heat distortion and how to reverse it.
  • Demonstrate the process of edge wiring.
  • Present fundamental knowledge in metal finishing post welding.

Pre-Requisites:

Successful completion of Seminar MS202.

You will need to purchase and bring/wear your own:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Metal-Shaping Tool Set*
  • Marking-Out Items*
  • Starter Round Drift Punch Set*

Please note, not all tools are required for every seminar.

Theory / Method Discussion:

  • Appropriate use of gas-welding equipment.
  • Gas welding different metals.
  • Preparing components for gas welding.
  • Weld relieve and reversing heat distortion.
  • Revisit metal-finishing.
  • Sequence and technique of edge wiring.

Exercises:

  • Block centre swage into top part of mudguard.
  • Butt welding blanks in steel, aluminium, (brass).
  • Wiring edge on basic curve.
  • Fitting mudguard skirt to mudguard.
  • Tack welding mudguard to skirt, planish area.
  • Weld skirt to mudguard, relieve weld.
  • Metal-finish welded area.
