Tackling Complex Projects (Mudguard 1)

Learning Objective:

At the conclusion of this lesson, participants will be able to:

  • Assess complex projects and analyse their components.
  • Plan the order of operations to be conducted within a component.
  • Produce a component utilising bucks to reference shape.
  • Demonstrate the ability to create bulbous- and return shapes through blocking on tree stump and sandbag.
  • Use wheeling machine to planish and to create transitions.

Pre-Requisites:

Successful completion of Seminar MS101, or trade qualification as a Panel-Beater.

You will need to purchase and bring/wear your own:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Metal-Shaping Tool Set*
  • Marking-Out Items*
  • Starter Round Drift Punch Set*

Please note, not all tools are required for every seminar.

Theory / Method Discussion:

  • Appropriate use of tools and equipment.
  • Review knowledge about bulbous shapes and return shapes.
  • Revisit techniques such as stump shrinking and stretching, puckering and blocking.
  • Assess components as part of the Mudguard project.
  • Breakdown of the project into segments.
  • Discussing the sequence of operations to be conducted to produce mudguard shape.

Exercises:

  • Taking patterns and templates.
  • Create a bulbous shape through blocking on tree stump and sand bag.
  • Create a return shape through stretching on tree stump.
  • Planish hammered areas with wheeling machine and creating a smooth transition between bulbous and return shapes.
  • Adjust shapes in accordance to buck.
