The Evolutionary SS120 - Coachbuilt by Finch
What if SS100 production had not been interrupted by World War II?
William Lyons was developing the successful series of SS90 and SS100 sports-cars when production was interrupted by WWII.
Eight years later after WWII, in 1948, Lyons launched the XK120 as the show-car for the new Jaguar 3.4 litre XK engine. The first XK120s were hand-built with aluminium bodies on ash frames mounted on modified Jaguar Mk V chassis.
What if SS100 production had not been interrupted, and Lyons further developed the SS90/SS100 series on the SS100 or Mk V chassis? Perhaps, Lyons might have evolved an ‘SS120’ eight years earlier than the XK120. The 3.4 litre XK engine might then have been an engine upgrade to the SS120.
In the late 1930s, just prior to the war, contemporary vehicles to the Lyons' Coupe were the Bugatti Type 57 Atlantic and the Mercedes 540K Autobahn Kruiser. At the 1938 Earls Court Motor Shown, Lyons presented his newly developed prototype SS100 Coupe demonstrating that he had a vision for competing against his European counterparts.
Finch is pleased to offer our beautiful SS120 range of vehicles with styling contemporary to the classic and highly desirable vehicles of the late 1930s and early 1940s. Our ‘what-if’ car - the evolution of the SS100 that might have been.
