Introduction to Metal-Shaping Techniques & Principles (The Basics)

Learning Objective:

At the conclusion of this lesson, participants will be able to:

  • Produce comprehensive templates and patterns as a basis for replicating complex shapes.
  • Define and recognise different shapes and their variations.
  • Perform multiple manual shrinking and stretching techniques and locate their application.

Pre-Requisites:

No prior training or experience is needed, though you will need practical hands-on aptitude.

You will need to purchase and bring/wear your own:

  • Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
  • Metal-Shaping Tool Set*
  • Marking-Out Items*
  • Starter Round Drift Punch Set*

  • Template and Pattern making
  • Appropriate use of tools and equipment
  • Differences between compound and single-curvature shapes
  • Bulbous shapes
  • Return shapes

Exercises:

  • Take accurate patterns and templates and comprehend the information it provides.
  • Create s-shape through blocking and puckering.
  • Produce hubcap shape on wheeling machine and tree stump.
  • Stretch a return-curve on wheeling machine.
  • Shape a section of a quarter panel with wheel arch on wheeling machine with use of tree stump, bench heads and hand tools.
